?Remember that they are our friends, spouses, colleagues?. Those where the main tenets of the Minister of Public Health, Andre Mama Fouda?s speech during the official launch of the communication campaign against the stigmatization and discrimination of people living with HIV in  Cameroon on March 4, 2015.

Statistics gathered by RECAP+ with the support of PPSAC in 2012 reveal that stigmatization and discrimination severely affect more women than men. 78% of women are excluded from social events. Similarly, 72% of women are excluded from religious activities or worship areas, and 81% are excluded from family activities. 61% of women are victims of insults, harassment or verbal threats.

Statistics of the Demographic and Health Survey conducted in 2011 reveal that only 12% of women and 18% of men are able to tolerate persons living with HIV, for example, caring for an infected parent, buying fresh vegetables from a trader living with HIV, keeping secret the status of an infected family member and accepting that an HIV positive female teacher continues working.

The Minister reiterated the fact that communities must be tolerant to people living with HIV because the fact that he or she is HIV infected does not mean it is the end of their lives. They have got potential that needs to be explored.

On the backdrop of the high percentage of stigmatization and discrimination that exists in Cameroon, the minister in a press briefing informed the media that the government of Cameroon has put in place a communication strategy to eradicate all forms of this ill from our society. Television spots and newspaper advertisements would be made available as a means of education and sensitization to the public.
